NORTH BATTLEFORD AREA MEN FINED $5,880 FOR UNLAWFUL HUNTING

April 9, 2015 by Chelsea Walters

Released on April 7, 2015

Three men from the North Battleford area were recently fined a total of $5,880 in North Battleford provincial court for unlawfully hunting elk in the Biggar area.

Lawrence Lee Meechance, Neal Meechance and Gerald Meechance, of Red Pheasant First Nation, were each found guilty of one count of unlawful hunting under The Saskatchewan Wildlife Act and Regulations.

The charges resulted from a call to the Ministry of Environment’s North Battleford field office in October 2013.  Conservation officers investigated the call and found that three men had unlawfully shot an elk on private, fenced land.  The men were located at the scene with the animal and were subsequently charged.

“The assistance of the public is invaluable as we work to protect and preserve Saskatchewan’s natural resources,” Ministry of Environment Compliance and Enforcement Director Ken Aube said.  “Respect for the province’s hunting laws is an important component of effective wildlife management and I’m confident that the penalties in this case will help deter others from this type of illegal activity.”

If you suspect wildlife, fisheries, forestry or environmental violations, please call your local Ministry of Environment office, Saskatchewan’s toll-free Turn In Poachers line at 1-800-667-7561 or #5555 for SaskTel cellular subscribers, or report a violation online at www.saskatchewan.ca/conservation.  You may be eligible for cash rewards from the SaskTip Reward Program.
