The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is reminding people that they can turn guns, antlers, and used hunting and fishing equipment into habitat for wildlife across the province, while receiving a tax-deductible receipt for their generosity. This program was initiated in the fall of 1998 to give the people of Saskatchewan an option for getting rid of their firearms and benefiting wildlife in the process.
Individuals can donate their unwanted firearms to the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, a non-profit, non-government, charitable organization. The firearms are sold through public auctions and/or fundraising events with the proceeds being donated to the SWF’s Habitat Trust Fund, that acquires and enhances habitat for wildlife. An official receipt is issued to the donor upon sale of the firearm. If the firearm cannot be sold, and the donor agrees, it will be given to Saskatchewan Association of Firearms Education (SAFE) for instructional purposes.
The SWF does not accept handguns or prohibited firearms.
The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is not encouraging the disposal of firearms or the elimination of hunting/shooting sports. We are encouraging those that feel they want to dispose of their firearms to put a little back into the wildlife resource for future generations.
For over 20 years, SWF’s Guns for Habitat and Antlers for Habitat initiatives have allowed individuals to donate unwanted firearms, hunting & fishing equipment, and antlers for a good cause, raising over $270,000 in the process. Thanks to matching programs, that number quadruples!
“We appreciate the generosity of everyone who has donated to these programs in the past. All of the proceeds from the sale of these items are used to secure critical wildlife habitat in our province for the benefit of our wildlife resources and generations of Saskatchewan residents” said Darren Newberry, Director of Habitat Lands for the SWF.
The SWF will gladly arrange for pickup of these donations anywhere across Saskatchewan. The SWF will also provide assistance with the firearm transfer process.
